A Visit to Walt Disney World’s Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant
Happy New Year and I hope the Holiday season has been good to you! I was able to spend the last few weeks of 2025 with all of my family together as my son was home from college. Like we did last year, we decided to travel to Walt Disney World to spend some holiday time together as it seems to be a better value spending money on a trip rather than buying more “stuff” for each other that we didn’t really need! During this most recent trip to Disney World we once again visited one of our favorite places to eat – The Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant!

Located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the Sci-Fi Dine-In is basically a mock indoor drive-in movie theater that places you inside little custom made cars to sit in and eat while enjoying classic B-movie trailers, intermission, and classic commercials from the drive-ins of the 1950s and early 1960s while under the fake stars! Car hops take care of you with bringing you food from the snack bar to chow down while you enjoy the kookiness of what’s playing up on the big screen.
The “drive-in” first opened in 1991, and has consistently been a popular dining destination for people that visit the park. Sadly, for many this is the closest thing they will ever get to experience to visiting a drive-in theater. I first visited the restaurant in 1994 and instantly fell in love, because it brought me back to the old days when I was a kid visiting the drive-in movies. Sitting in the little cars just added to the fun! One thing that always stuck out in my mind from that first visit was the fact they had real drive-in speakers playing the audio from the screen (more on that later) mounted on poles at each car, so it was just like you were there at a real one!
I’m pretty sure that I probably just a burger and fries on my first visit in 1994 – and the fare has not changed much, and you will find some debate online that the menu today is not as good as it used to be. Well guys, it’s supposed to be a mash up of a drive-in theater and drive-in restaurant! You can go to La Cellier at Epcot if you need a Filet Mignon! Burgers, mini-corn dogs, onion rings, fries, and milk shakes are the right food while you are watching the trailer for Attack of the 50 Foot Woman! Like almost all Disney restaurants, there are options for those with food allergies or alternative diets so all can be included. Of note is the plant based ‘Flying Saucer Impossible Burger’, which is what I shared with my wife as well as fries, Sci-Fi Plant Nachos, and a shared chocolate shake. My son and his friend that came with us had the Classic American Burgers. While the menu is not going to be the fanciest meal you have while at the parks, it will be one of the most memorable. The atmosphere, fun of eating in the little cars, and crazy things on the screen will far outlast the memory of the food!

The large drive-in screen shows some of the nuttiest intermission clips, commercials, and ads that the mid-century had to offer. The clips that show on the drive-in screen are on a constant 47 minute and 17 second loop, so you will easily be able to see everything and will probably be finishing up your meal as things start over. Many of these low budget cult classics are flat out laughable and help keep the mood light and fun! You’ll see trailers for Cat Women of the Moon, Plan 9 From Outer Space, Robot Monster, Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, and more! Even a classic Tom & Jerry cartoon is thrown in the mix. Most of the movie trailers shown I’ve seen over the years, many because of my first visit to this place over three decades ago.
That first visit for me was also responsible for putting the bug in my head about having drive-in speakers “at home” that could actually play something. While it would be years later that technology started to catch up (for me at least), it was 2014 while at a Good Guys Car Show that I started noticing people putting old drive-in speakers beside their cars. Some were simply props that did nothing, and a few had wires running out of there car so the car stereo played through them. I liked the idea, but thought there had to be a better way for the speakers to independently play something like a curated playlist of 50s & 60s audio gems at the car show or in your house! I went to work and built my first drive-in speakers set not long after, although it was strictly MP3 based. The Bluetooth capabilities would come a bit later as the technology evolved. But even at the start, I wanted my speakers to be a combination of what I heard coming from the speakers at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater combined with music of 50s and 60s! Basically, I wanted the film ‘American Graffiti’ at home! This entire website is basically a result of all of that, and I can thank Disney’s genius for coming up with this unique place to eat and be entertained! As I mentioned before, the sound from the screen is coming from vintage drive-in speakers that are placed at each car/table. They used 1960s era Projected Sound speakers for this with white knobs mounted on custom made junction boxes. The speakers do not come off the J-boxes like the real thing, and the knobs cannot adjust the volume. They are basically one all the time, but at a very nice volume that you can easily enjoy what is playing on the screen and still have a conversation with the people you are seated with! Just like walking around outside at a real drive-in, a trip to the restroom here has a unique sound that can be found at an outdoor theater as you hear the echo of hundreds of tiny speakers bouncing off cars under the fake stars on the ceiling!
To sum up, I love this place. It is as much of an attraction as it is a place for lunch or dinner. I’ve always gotten great feedback from people that I’ve taken to it and suggested it to. With any restaurant, check the menu in advance so you know what you are getting in to. I feel the food is perfect for the retro drive-in environment, but if one is hungry for a more “home cooked” meal, then maybe visit the 50’s Prime Time Café – which is classic place to eat in its own right! But if you yearn for the throwback of seeing movies under the stars from your youth, or want your youth to experience what it once was like The Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant might be the perfect place to eat during your next trip to Walt Disney World!
